Court Is Now In Session_Case006

The People v. "The 7-Minute and 42-Second Voice Note"

Court Clerk:

"All rise!"

"The Honourable Justice Common Sense presiding."

Judge:

"Be seated."

"Bailiff, please bring in extra chairs for the gallery. I see several people in the back are already leaning against the walls, looking exhausted."

Court Clerk:

"Case No. 006. The People versus 'The 7-Minute and 42-Second Voice Note.'

Charge: Unlawful detention of a listener's ears, reckless disruption of a daily schedule, and audio assault via excessive filler words."

Prosecutor:

"Ready for the People, My Lord. We will demonstrate today that the accused is not a text message replacement, but an unedited, low-budget podcast forced upon an innocent citizen."

Counsel:

"Ready for the Defence. My Lord, my client is an expression of raw human emotion. Nuance cannot be confined to twenty-six letters on a keyboard. Typing takes time; the voice liberates."

Judge:

"Bring in the accused."

The Court Clerk walks to the centre of the room carrying a large digital audio waveform on a tablet. The waveform looks like a never-ending mountain range.

A collective groan echoes through the gallery. A young man rubs his temples. A woman whispers to her sister, "God forbid I press play on this thing."

The Case for the Prosecution

Prosecutor:

"My Lord, the People submit Exhibit A, the structural breakdown of the audio file in question."

The courtroom projector illuminates a timeline of the 7:42 audio clip.

[0:00 - 0:45] Heavy wind noise, throat clearing, and "Um, so basically..."

[0:45 - 2:30] A tangent about a traffic jam that has nothing to do with the story.

[2:30 - 5:15] Repeating the same point three different times using slightly different words.

[5:15 - 7:00] Walking into a grocery store, interacting with a cashier.

[7:00 - 7:42] The actual question: "Are we still meeting at 4:00 PM?"

Prosecutor:

"Seven minutes and forty-two seconds, My Lord! All to ask a question that could have been typed in four words: 'Still fine for 4?' The victim was trapped. They couldn't skim it. They couldn't use CTRL+F to find the point. The prosecution calls The Victim's Schedule to the stand."

The Victim's Schedule enters the box, wearing a cracked wristwatch and holding a crumpled to-do list.

Court Clerk:

"Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?"

The Victim's Schedule:

"I do. Though I'm currently running eight minutes behind because of the accused."

Prosecutor:

"Describe the impact of Exhibit A on your afternoon."

The Victim's Schedule:

"It was a hostage situation! The victim had to unplug their car Bluetooth, find headphones so the whole parking lot wouldn't hear the sender's personal business, and sit in total silence. At minute three, the sender said, 'Wait, what was I saying again?' and paused for ten seconds. My Lord, our life flashed before our eyes. We lost a piece of our lunch break we will never get back."

The Cross-Examination

Counsel:

(Rising confidently) "Mr Schedule, let's be fair. Did my client not offer a solution? Was the 2x Speed Button not available on the screen?"

The Victim's Schedule:

"We tried the 2x button! But at double speed, the sender sounds like a panicked chipmunk high on caffeine. It made the heavy breathing parts even more terrifying!"

Counsel:

"But it saved you time, did it not? The defence calls the sender, The Multitasker, to the stand."

A man enters the box holding a steering wheel cover in one hand and a grocery bag in the other.

Counsel:

"Mr Multitasker, explain to the court why you did not simply type the text."

The Multitasker:

"My Lord, my hands were full! I was driving, then I had to grab my bags, then I was trying to explain a very complex situation about how I felt. Typing wouldn't have captured my tone. I wanted them to hear my heart!"

Prosecutor:

(Interjecting) "We didn't want to hear your heart, sir; we heard you buying bananas! We heard the cashier scan three separate items!"

The Judgment

Justice Common Sense taps his gavel twice, silencing the giggling gallery. He looks at the massive waveform on the screen and sighs deeply.

Judge:

"The modern voice note is a double-edged sword. It offers the speaker convenience while shifting the entire labour of communication onto the listener. It turns a mutual conversation into a lecture."

The courtroom holds its breath.

"However, human expression cannot be regulated by a timer. A passionate explanation or a comforting message may rightfully take minutes. The voice note itself is not an audio prison; it is merely an open mic."

The Judge looks sternly at the defendant.

"Therefore, 'The 7-Minute and 42-Second Voice Note' is found NOT GUILTY of malicious detention.

However..."

The Judge slams his gavel down. Crack!

"This Court finds Stream of Consciousness guilty of public nuisance and failure to edit. You spoke before you knew your point, using the recipient's time as your rough draft.

Sentence is hereby passed: Stream of Consciousness is sentenced to mandatory internal processing before pressing the microphone icon. Furthermore, this Court issues a strict Judicial Declaration of Audio Limits:

Any voice note exceeding two minutes must legally be preceded by an introductory text summarising the topic, e.g., 'This is a story about my boss, listen when you have time.' Anyone who sends an audio note longer than five minutes without a written table of contents shall have their microphone privileges suspended, forcing them to use dictation software that misinterprets every third word."

The Judge stands, gathering his robes.

The Principle of the Court:

"Your convenience should never become another person's chore."

"Court is adjourned."

Bang.

Next Week Before This Honourable Court...

Case No. 007: The People v. "Left Unread for 3 Days but Posting on Instagram Stories"

The ultimate betrayal of digital presence. The prosecution intends to prove that having 'no time to reply to a text' while simultaneously having enough time to post a picture of a latte with a lo-fi filter is a breach of the unspoken social contract. Proceedings continue next week.

  1. 😂 The 7 Minute of throat clearing, and “Um, so basically…” are the introductory and expression of emotions. I mean what are friends for
It's important you know the situation at hand before the 4:pm appointment.
Honourable Justice..., “We listen, we don't..."
On behalf of Stream of Consciousness, temper justice with mercy😩
