You are getting there.
Not as quickly as you imagined, perhaps.
Not with everything neatly arranged. Not with every bill
paid, every decision settled, or every tomorrow looking particularly friendly.
But you are getting there.
Sometimes the road is smooth.
Sometimes it is slippery.
Sometimes you have to slow down because you cannot quite see
what is ahead. Sometimes you stop for a little while, catch your breath, look
at how far you have come, and wonder if you are actually making progress at
all.
You are.
Keep going.
I had a conversation with a friend recently. One of those
conversations where the usual “How are you?” somehow became a little
more honest.
“Thanks for asking,” he said. “That one na a whole
conversation entirely. But I thank God. I am moving slowly but surely.”
There was something about that sentence.
Slowly but surely.
Not triumphantly.
Not spectacularly.
Just surely.
Because sometimes that is what progress looks like.
He spoke about the weight of taking big steps that are not
necessarily producing big results yet. About being financially stretched. About
how being abroad can create a strange illusion from a distance.
People see the location.
They see the opportunity.
They see the photographs.
They hear, “I am in the United Kingdom.”
And somewhere in their minds, the story becomes complete.
This person has made it.
But life does not become automatically sorted because your
plane landed somewhere else.
You can cross an ocean and still have bills waiting for you.
You can make courageous decisions and still have very little
left in your pocket afterwards.
You can be building something significant and still feel
incredibly pressed by the ordinary business of staying alive.
And sometimes, you cannot even lean too heavily on family
because everyone has their own battles to fight.
So you carry what you can.
You ask for help when you need it.
You take a breather when you must.
You adjust.
You pray.
You start again.
And then you keep moving.
Perhaps we need to become kinder to people who are in the
middle of becoming.
The middle is not particularly photogenic.
Nobody posts the spreadsheet that says, “This month was
difficult.”
Nobody uploads the screenshot of the account balance that
made them sit quietly for ten minutes.
Nobody celebrates the days when the greatest achievement was
simply not giving up.
Yet these things count.
They count.
There is courage in continuing when the evidence of progress
is still embarrassingly small.
There is strength in taking a big step and accepting that
the reward may not arrive immediately.
There is wisdom in knowing when to push and when to breathe.
And there is something deeply beautiful about being able to
say:
I am not where I want to be yet.
But I am not where I used to be either.
So, if the road feels slippery today, hold on.
If you need to slow down, slow down.
If you need support, ask.
If you need a breather, breathe.
But do not confuse a difficult stretch of road with the end
of the journey.
You are getting there.
Slowly, perhaps.
Surely, hopefully.
One step.
Then another.
Then another.
Keep going.
