A friend of mine was speaking of their life goals and plans when suddenly we hit a very interesting point. My friend felt there are limitations in our environment that can limit how far one can reach; I thought differently and gave my reasons, let us see if you agree.
Let us start off by pondering on what you would do if what you want is not where you are? Why you may ask - well, it is for me the basis for this conversation. The real issue in environmental considerations is/are the gap(s) (Perceived or Real) that exist between that location and what we seek. That leaves us wanting to understand if my present location buffets my aspirations or if it nudges it in the forward directions? Yet, one must understand that a significant way to see what is out there is understanding you.
Okay, I actually see the environment as a neutral arbiter. Yes, it must be said that "where" can be a state or physical location - yet it is important that one can assess what options our where provides us with regards to accessing other locations and at what cost. It is my considered opinion that at times, we fail to see that most of the things we play at society are not our needs but our wants. It is more like a wishlist that is devoid of all there needs to be considered. Now take a look at the previous paragraph, you will note that the conversation was about "wants" not "needs". Now there is a lot that that reveals - it also answers the first question. So I guess that before we make our surrounding or society the fall guy, perhaps we can start with first understanding our actual "state or where", and follow with a "needs assessment."
Here is the thing, doing a needs assessment will help us see our real gaps and that process can be so value-creating. For often, identifying skill or gaps always leads to the drive to fill them up. And in that journey, you begin to understand that your environment is there for you to impact - not what you get but the value you create. You know why? Well, People remember you for the value you created and what and where you are is not an excuse to stop being of value.
Yes, it is true we ask questions for clarity, yet it must be said that our bias is also very evident at such times. Hence, why it is true that our socialization and peculiarities will define what we are biased about - being bias is just who we all are. Now that is what society and our environment and what we allow can instil in us. Yet, bias is always subsumed in the knowledge we allow to shine through. Do know that like gold, our beauty can only sip through but by fire - so see in society a fire to bring out your best, no matter how supportive or harsh that environment might be.
Nugget: The only way you will see what is out there for you is by understanding you.
