The One Who Understands our Silence

They understand our silence
Know our purpose
See our plots
Discern and divide the griefs
Sell us hope
And beat the clock of truth in our forlorn faces
They chime the links between dreams and reality
And stay constant in season and out of season.

Those are simple lines that tell the story we often look out for. Reminds us of what we all earnestly crave for - a friend. How many of us have read or heard of the friendship between David and Jonathan? Jonathan was the light when others set darkness about David. David walked in the valley of the shadow of death, but his journey was made easy because there was a friend who clung closer than a brother - Jonathan. His love grew in the presence of increasing hate from Saul (his father).

And that is a key nexus, the lure of friendship stems from the bounds of soul-bonding that we find for the other. It is one that grows in inexplicable places and interestingly, we see less of it because all around us, what presses and takes over the room are the hating world and the invitation to the lonely road where we alone glover in the dark, with little or no support. Have you noticed that we see more of the darkness around us than the light - as in we often focus our energy and fight at the darkness and often forget the light that stares us in the face?

Let us take another peek at that story of David and Jonathan - David was surrounded by love where it mattered while hate pressed on him. As in, his wife - Michal, who was the King's daughter loved him; Israelites did and the King's son loved him. So while the king sought his head, friendship kept him down the road. How was this possible? David was exemplary: his honour shone, his character was impeccable, and as such, everyone who came across him, wanted more of him. They wanted to dig into his silence - to see it, and ultimately understand it.

Are you here? Good! Let me ask you - how attractive are you on the inside? Is there a light that glows from you that others can tend to? Does the fruit and evidence that we put out, call or draw people to us? Remember that from the wells of us, do we give what we really are. It's just who and what we represent. So what do you attract? Do you remember that simple law in physics on action and reaction being equal and opposite? Yes! You are beginning to get it - we are what we give; the scent that emanates from us will make someone want to get closer and inquire what body oil or perfume we have applied. Indeed, what we ooze matters.

Do you sacrifice? How much of others do you think even in your pain or grief? How much do you stand out for others with no gain in sight even at the danger of yourself? Wait a moment, how much freedom do people have around you? Must they keep a standard or face? Or can they just be the weak person that they are - free to be themselves? Think also of this, are you that place they can always find succour and encouragement?  In all, are you the kind of friend you are looking for?

Nugget: In silence, the deep calls and only the attentive hears.
