Away with the self

I was watching a movie on television and it revolved around a friend that was spurned by an insecure spouse.  The fury of the husband was without end and let. Yet, it was easy for the lady to have felt and acted as she did.

I tried understanding the whole episode and some things began to settle in. Often times we are good to those we know, those we have details of, and those we hope to gain something or the other from. The good we can do and how we rationalize the same for our end can be so far-reaching.

The experience from that soap brought me to the realization that we are all bias in one form or the other. A lot of us have what we do and what we do not do just because it does not fall into our circle. It is either the person on the other side is not a relative, friend,  and perhaps they are of a different religious leaning. There is usually an attempt to justify our actions and explain them away.

Yes, we will always hold some bias or the other. Indeed there is no gainsaying that we will not always have favourites. Truth be said, it would seem that by default this is how we are created. Yet, we can work at not making that our everyday basis for decisions. We can work at being that fair person even when our life experience does not support such choices. I agree that our world is plagued with so much individualness. Still, we have to see the human side of us and the fact that no matter where others stand or represent, our contact with others is a reminder that we are in a social contract one with another and it is strengthened in that the primordial essence of life is service one to another.

I can imagine that you may have had your fingers burnt been the good samaritan, yes it is not an easy cap to wear - yet one worth wearing even with all its nuances. Do not worry about being the goody-two-shoes, that smile and value are much more than all that.

Nugget: The perfect excuse is that we did not know better, yet "life is only worth living to the extent it is used in service to humanity" not-self.

  1. Life is service one to another. Sadly we now live in a world were individualism is wildly encouraged and celebrated. Thank you for this much needed reminder for us to tap into our humanity!
