Find Your Freedom

Do not find yourself at the mercy of a bureaucratic rope about to hang. Are you locked in such a quiet but debilitating world where the expectations are destined to keep you caged and your creativity is locked to some administratively managed norms that does not even help the system.


Aha! We all find this situation at some point in life where the laws guiding either ethics or conducts ends up killing the need for us to take the initiative. We get so subsumed in the whole 'this is how we do it here' mantra that we actually lose sight of the what we actually do.

Wait! There are also those practices that Human Resources has put together to maintain the balance and drive the firm's goal and culture. In short these corporate nuances is expected to be our identity and being tied to our existence, they are expected to translate to what gives us the competitive edge. Even though, these processes are driven by the individual staff understanding and posturing, especially those that has been given to them. Many a times, we are held captive by the processes and no intention is paid to being progressive, innovative and forward looking.

Like our work, those of us caught within these long lines of 'do's and don't', write our work life within it's restrictive arms. We excuse our clumsiness to the system and we explain our tardiness and lack of foresight to the decisions others have made to provide direction. All we do is to define what our work is and what it is not. We lock ourselves in a constant circle of pushing the buck; 'it's them not us'; You hear statements like, "Management has not given any contrary advise" - and then you wonder why that individual can not originate a memo stating the other options available and by so doing change the narrative. We sit down, push files around and waiting for who will 'bell the cat' and eventually be man enough to take a decision. Our mails are simply to push the issues away from our desk as soon as they arrive, no initiative, nothing new added; simply do your own and leave the next person to run their own.

Okay, here is the catch; no one pays you to be a lay. No! No! You salary is for you to think, think and think. Its for your thoughts to produce something fresh and a solution. You are not only the solution but the platform for solutions. You are the one that must stop the tide from taking your company when the storm comes knocking. So you must be SMART. And being smart is been forward looking and proactive. Nothing stale lasts because it is unimaginative and in today's world you will not last whether in your own business or in another person's own by following ever piece of written legislation. No! And hell No! Norms will guide against chaos but we are expected to stay creative while obeying them. They can never be an excuse for staying numb and dull.

So Mummy Bella, I agree with you, we must find our Freedom, we must find our cutting edge and make the work place a melting pot for ideas. Thank you for that post and thank you for making me think this much today.

Nugget:  Liberate yourself. Stop trying to define what is your job and what isn't.
